Scripture Reading

2 Corinthians 4:8-18 (NIV)
8 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. 10 We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. 11 For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that his life may be revealed in our mortal body. 12 So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you. 13 It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken.” With that same spirit of faith we also believe and therefore speak, 14 because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you in his presence. 15 All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God. 16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

What do you do when you are hard pressed on every side?

1. Cry out to God

Psalm 50:15 (NIV)
15 and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me.”

That is why I taught you the anxiety prayer. Do you remember it?

Lamentations 2:19a (NIV)
19 Arise, cry out in the night, as the watches of the night begin; pour out your heart like water in the presence of the Lord.

When you’re hard pressed you can’t sleep. You just keep waking up. Open up your heart to God.

2. Know that God is with me and God is for me

Isaiah 43:2 (NIV)
2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.

We talked about this last week when we looked at cause and effect thinking.

You don’t need an explanation. You need God.

Hebrews 13:5b (NIV)
5 … because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

3. There is more to the story

2 Corinthians 4:8-9 (NIV)
8 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.

2 Corinthians 4:14 (NIV)
14 because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you in his presence.

God is good. It is not the end of His story.

Did you ever get so tense when you were reading a book that you needed to see how it ended? Your tension goes down when you know the end of the story.

You can go the end of His book and see that at the end of this temporary life there is an eternal one.

When you are hard pressed you need to have to get a bigger perspective. You have to stop thinking about just here and now and you have to live in light of eternity.

This is not all there is. This is simply the practice for the game. I played football in high school. Practice was hard. Many times it was not fun. There were moments, like scrimmaging, where you got a taste of the game that were fun, but for the most part you just wanted it to be over. But you did it for the game. The game made it all worth while.

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 (NIV)
16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
