The Christian life involves growth. We are in process.

1 John 3:1-24 (NIV)
1 How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 3 Everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as he is pure. 4 Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. 5 But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. 6 No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him. 7 Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. He who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. 8 He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. 9 No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God. 10 This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother. 11 This is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. 12 Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous. 13 Do not be surprised, my brothers, if the world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. Anyone who does not love remains in death. 15 Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life in him. 16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. 17 If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. 19 This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence 20 whenever our hearts condemn us. For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. 21 Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God 22 and receive from him anything we ask, because we obey his commands and do what pleases him. 23 And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. 24 Those who obey his commands live in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.

1 John 3:1-7

The life we have in Christ is a process of becoming more and more like Jesus. There is a difference between committing a sin and continuing to sin. When a believer commits a sin we can repent, confess and find forgiveness. A person who continues to sin, on the other hand, is not sorry for what they are doing. Therefore, they never repent which keeps them in opposition to God. This is what we talk about here all the time in living by trying to do the next right thing.

1 John 3:8-13

We all have areas where temptation is strong and habits are hard to conquer. These weaknesses present the evil one with opportunities to attack us which we must deal with.

The attack

1 Peter 5:8-9 (NIV)
8 Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

When the attack comes, just keep standing strong. You do that by continuing to …

Submit to God and resist the evil one

James 4:7 (NIV)
7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Submit yourself to God and resist the evil one.

How to submit

James 4:6 (NIV)
6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

You cannot submit to God without humility. Having a humble and submissive heart is a choice we make. It’s what we talk about all the time in living by doing the next right thing.

Proverbs 3:5-8 (NIV)
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. 7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil. 8 This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.

How to resist

1 Corinthians 10:13 (NIV)
13 No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

Part of being a follower of Christ is that we are engaged in a very real spiritual battle. We also live in a broken world on a fallen planet. We can get frustrated and give in to our selfish desires and quick fixes, or we can realize that this is a battle. But we are not alone in this battle. God is with us and for us.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5 (NIV)
3 For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

1 John 3:14-24

Real love is an action, not a feeling. Remember that we are called to love others as we love ourselves.

Our love for people is evidence that we truly love God.

Loving God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength is evidenced in and by our love for others.

1 John 3:14 (NIV)
14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. Anyone who does not love remains in death.

John 13:34-35 (NIV)
34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Love one another. It is repeated three times in this passage. Jesus said this was the way people will know we are His disciples. Think about that. How we love. That is a big deal. People will know we are followers of Jesus by how well we love.

A good way to get started loving well is by living …

The Golden Rule

Matthew 7:12 (NIV)
12 So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

Love in the Kingdom of God is different than love in the world. A mainstay in our society is the idea that I will treat you the way that you treat me. You scratch my back, I’ll scratch your. If you are nice to me, I will be nice to you. This way of doing things is an important part of what keeps our society intact. However, as the people of the Kingdom of God, we have a different standard. We are to treat people the way we want to be treated. By that I mean we are to initiate love, not just respond to it. We are to be kind to everyone, not just to the people that are kind to us. It is a completely different concept than the one that most of us are used to. We treat others right, regardless of how they treat us. All of us probably need to take a pretty good look at how well we are doing in this area of our lives. I would guess that we are way more influenced by “you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours” than we are the “golden rule”.
